Belle Glade Plans To Annex 754 Acres

Belle Glade plans to annex 754 acres of state-owned land in unincorporated Palm Beach County near the city.

City officials last month received a petition from the state asking for the voluntary annexation of the property, generally located near the corner of State Road 80 and Belle Glade Road.

The annexation request includes the Lakeside Medical Center property, which is owned by the state and leased to the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, as well as the former Glades Correctional Institute prison site.

Last month, Gov. Rick Scott and the Cabinet approved the $1.2 million sale of the 211-acre vacant prison site to a group of investors who grew up in the town, including a former mayor.
