Sawgrass Mills Plans 80,000 SF Expansion

Sawgrass Mills, already one of the country’s largest outlet malls, is ready to grow even more.
Sawgrass’ developers got the green light Tuesday from Sunrise city officials to construct three buildings northeast of The Colonnade Outlets. Sunrise commissioners unanimously voted in favor of site plans that call for nearly 82,000 square feet of additional space for retailers, restaurants and public restrooms.
The giant Sunrise mall is already home to more than 350 stores.
The planned construction is the latest in a series of expansions at Sawgrass.
The Colonnade Outlets debuted in 2006 as the mall’s outdoor row of luxury retailers. At least 62,000 square feet have been added to that section to make room for more coveted brands. Jimmy Choo, Prada, Valentino, Versace and dozens of other high-end stores have found a home at The Colonnade Outlets.
Fashion Row opened in 2012, bringing along 140,000 square feet of additional retail space.
But before customers step into any of the new stores and restaurants, Sawgrass developers must first deliver on the construction of a parking garage previously approved by Sunrise officials. At a City Commission meeting Tuesday, a couple of nearby business owners also expressed concerns about parking issues that may rise as a result of the additional buildings. A representative of Sawgrass Commons, a shopping center neighboring Sawgrass Mills, urged the city to set up a task force to resolve any impending parking challenges.

At approximately 2.4 million square feet, Sawgrass Mills Mall ranks as the seventh largest mall in the United States, the largest single story mall in the U.S., and the second largest in Florida. Aventura Mall is the largest conventional shopping mall in Florida, having a gross leasable area of 2,700,000.
